ADMISSION PHILOSOPHY

La Jolla Country Day School seeks students who demonstrate the ability to succeed in an academically ambitious, college-preparatory program. Students are selected for admission to the school on the basis of academic potential, developmental maturity, school achievement, and readiness for the school's program. Various assessments, such as testing, interviews, and observation, are used to provide information in the evaluation of each candidate. In all cases, the school retains the right to determine, as its sole discretion, whether or not to select a student for admission or to re-enroll a student. The school charges the Admission Committee, which includes both administrative and faculty representation, to make decisions based upon multiple criteria:

  • Strong character
  • Academic readiness or qualifications
  • Exceptional talent in the arts and/or athletics
  • Maturity
  • Affiliation with the school - special consideration for available space is given to qualified children of faculty/staff/administration, siblings of current students, and children of alumni who fit within the range of students best served by Country Day
  • Diversity and gender balance
  • Appropriateness of match between family and the school - including a parental commitment to establish a supportive partnership with the Country Day community

Pre-screen Policy for Grades 10 through 12 Applicants

La Jolla Country Day School is sometimes able to accept new students into Grades 10-12. In order to guarantee an applicant is qualified to handle the rigor of our academic program, we require a process known as a "pre-screen." A pre-screen involves submitting the following forms:

  • application with no fee
  • a current transcript
  • results from a recent standardized test
  • any other pertinent information requested by the Office of Admission

The pre-screen process may not occur until after the student has received first quarter grades for the current academic year. Once received, these documents will be reviewed by the director of admission, director of the Upper School, and a college counselor to determine if it is appropriate for the applicant to complete the admission process.

Late Applicant Policy

Families who complete their files after the priority consideration deadline of February 1, 2010, will be considered on a space available basis. Late applicant families are encouraged to submit all application documents as they await a potential evaluation opportunity.

La Jolla Country Day School admits students of any race, color, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, physical handicap, or medical condition to all the rights, priveleges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school our policy of non-discrimination extends to our education, athletic, and other school-administered programs.
