Make Room for Academic Achievement

Below is an excerpt from an article about setting a comfortable learning environment at home for children where Head of School Dr. Gary Krahn was interviewed.

So how’s the new school year starting out, parents? You’re probably glad to have the kids back in class, despite the traffic miles it adds to your daily commute, but perhaps there are other challenges. It isn’t always easy going from summer break to full fall throttle.

For those having difficulty transitioning into a new school routine or wanting to enhance your student’s performance this year, experts say what you establish at home can have a huge impact on their success.

“The most important component of the home space is an environment of unconditional love, compassion and curiosity,” says Dr. Gary Krahn, head of La Jolla Country Day School.

Beyond creating a safe and loving place for children in your homes and lives, Krahn also suggests having learning materials and a musical instrument for the child to play at home; a dark, quiet, electronics-free bedroom for optimum sleep; and time and space for playing and physical activities.

“Exclude TVs from play areas,” he advises. “TV interferes with the mental concentration that kids need for healthy development.”

Children should not have television in their bedrooms either, he believes. The same is true for connected devices. “The use of computer, tablets and technology should happen in common areas within the home,” says Krahn. “Your child’s electronic journey around the world must be supervised.”
