Mock Presidential Debate

By Jonathan Shulman
The AP United States Government class presented a mock presidential debate on October 24 for Middle School students and October 28 to Upper Schoolers. Students played the roles of major party candidates Hillary Clinton (Natalie Boyer ’17) and Donald Trump (Alfredo Covarrubias ’17) as well as Libertarian Gary Johnson (Remy Reya ’17), Green Party candidate Jill Stein (Gabby Stryker ’17), and independent candidate Evan McMullin (Landon Nutt ’17).

During the Upper School assembly, KPBS Evening News anchor Ebone Monet and former KUSI morning anchor Marc Bailey P’11, P’13 served as the panelists, asking tough questions of the candidates. The students had prepared extensively prior to the debate to fully understand how their candidates would answer a series of challenging questions, but they did not know what Ms. Monet and Mr. Bailey would ask until the moment the queries came.

The purpose of presenting the debate was to teach the Upper School about the depth and variety of political views among the presidential candidates. While the national media focuses primarily on the Democratic and Republican nominees, including the minor party candidates in the debate allows students to see alternative political philosophies applied to the issues.

The presidential debate was the third in a series presented by the AP United States Government. Last year’s students produced both Republican and Democratic primary debates.

KPBS was on-hand to cover Friday’s debate. You can watch the KPBS story here.
