Faculty Spotlight: Jean Ah Lee

By Communications
La Jolla Country Day School exists to inspire greatness for a better world. Our promise reinforces our commitment to developing a culture and community of faculty, staff, students and families who believe in something bigger than themselves. Below, Upper School mathematics teacher and surf coach Jean Ah Lee speaks to how she inspires greatness for a better world.

Greatness can be achieved by actions both big and small. Greatness is not luck or an accident, it is achieved through a process. Research has shown that the most successful people in the world were not smarter than their counterparts in their field, but they possessed four common distinctions to help them achieve greatness.
  1. Strong work ethic
  2. Person of character
  3. Ability to access and leverage mentors
  4. A desire to challenge the status quo and ask “what if?” or “why not?”
About Jean Ah Lee

Jean Ah Lee is an Upper School mathematics teacher and surf coach. She believes that our study of math isn’t just about learning the concepts. It’s the problem solving and analytical skills that we develop through math that can be applied to any field, career or life situation.

Ms. Lee was inspired to become an educator by her father who is an electrical engineering professor. Some of her favorite pieces of advice from him include: “Focus on what you know, not on what you don’t know,” and “If you fall 1,000 times, get up 1,001 times.” Ms. Lee encourages her students to maintain confidence and a positive attitude when faced with a challenge or undesirable outcome. Life isn’t always fun and easy, and neither is math.

Prior to LJCDS, Ms. Lee taught mathematics in New York City, Guatemala City and San Diego. She has served as an advisor for a variety of extracurricular activities including a music program and student government association, and acted as a Korean/Spanish/English translator for parent-teacher conferences. Jean Ah received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from MIT and worked as an electrical engineer at Bose Corporation. She subsequently received a Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Ms. Lee’s love for the ocean and surf are much of what drew her to San Diego. She also enjoys yoga and loves to travel.
