Why Are There So Many Sports and Athletic Teams at LJCDS?

By Director of Athletics and Physical Education Jeff Hutzler
When those of us of a certain age think of high school athletics, we probably think of the traditional ball sports (football, basketball and baseball), and a few traditionally gender-specific sports (cheerleading, softball, wrestling or field hockey). Fortunately, the school athletics landscape has changed considerably in the last 20 years or so, affording students far more athletic choices than their parents and grandparents.

LJCDS is a prime example of this evolution; today, nontraditional school sports such as rock climbing, surfing and Ultimate Frisbee are part of our offerings in addition to the more “mainstream” sports. The result is that we are reaching a wide swath of students, including students who may have been uninterested in the narrow offerings of their parents’ or grandparents’ generations. Our Middle and Upper School athletics programs currently include some 45 Middle and 55 Upper School teams, involving more than 90 percent of our Middle School and 80 percent of our Upper School students.

LJCDS’ athletic principles, which can be found on page nine of our Athletic Handbook, state that “the opportunity for participation in a wide variety of student-selected activities is a vital part of a student’s educational experience.” Breadth and depth of our athletic offerings are important because it affords a broad cross-section of students opportunities to experience meaningful growth, accomplishment, and success through the development of sound habits of mind, heart and body. In turn, our student-athletes learn and practice the:

  • skill of goal-setting and making plans to achieve those goals
  • ability to delay gratification
  • satisfaction of physical exertion and accomplishment
  • confidence to use and appreciate one’s body
  • willingness to take risks
  • gratification of working with others toward a shared goal
  • opportunity to apply strategic thinking to a physical endeavor
  • ability to pick oneself and one’s teammates up after a loss or setback
  • knowledge and patience required to make a recovery from injury
  • self-awareness to identify and face one’s challenges and fears
  • fulfillment of putting others before oneself.

These skills and habits stretch far beyond the field, court and pool; they simultaneously prepare our students to excel in the classroom, in the arts and in service to others. Athletic participation helps students meet LJCDS’ mission of preparing individuals for a lifetime of intellectual exploration, personal growth and social responsibility, and our academic goal of anticipating and effectively responding to a rapidly changing world. We are proud to offer a rich array of sports and athletics offerings that reach such a large percentage of our students. Go Torreys!
