Pedal for the Cause

By Upper School English, History and Social Science Teacher Deborah Shaul
Imagine the outfield at Petco Park covered in tents, stationery bicycles, water stations, and a vast array of healthy foodstuffs. In the very spot where batters take their warm up swings, there were tents, couches and massage tables. On home plate? An information booth and a water station. A party? Very much so, and this one was the culmination of a weekend-long fundraiser for cancer research.

On November 13, 11 teachers and 15 students from LJCDS participated in the Padres Pedal the Cause, cycling and spinning to raise money for cancer research.  Led by Laine Koman, team captain for the Teen Team, the students and alums who participated raised money in honor of Bradley Couch (’16), a cancer survivor. The teachers, along with their team captain Deborah Shaul, participated in the memory of Glen Pritzker, who passed away at the start of this school year from an aggressive form of cancer.

Some of our participants rode the 12, 25, and 40 mile courses, and many others cycled in the glaring sun through what has to have been the hardest spin classes, ever!

Pedal the Cause was founded by Bill and Amy Koman; Bill is a two-time cancer survivor, and this year’s event raised 2 million dollars to support cancer research!

A big thank you to the parents who led the charge, and a special thanks to Amy Koman and Ommid Asbaghi, whose generosity and tireless efforts helped us to create the team. A final thank you to the Bahrambeygui-Hosey family and Price Philanthropies, whose grant made the faculty team possible. What an extraordinary day at the ballpark!
