Standing Rock Sioux Hoop Circle Dance Performance

By Upper School English, History and Social Science Teacher Deborah Shaul
On Monday, November 14, Kevin Locke, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe performed hoop circle dances for the LJCDS community.

Mr. Locke travels around the world to share the cultural arts and history of Native Americans and has performed in over 90 countries to more than 1 million students and guests in the past 35 years. Over 100 students attended the hour and a half performance; Mr. Locke danced and sang, played traditional flutes and taught the Lakota language to an excited crowd.

“The hoop dance represents our (Lakota) philosophy of nature. Everything is a hoop. Where the earth meets the sky, the sky arcs over in a hoop and the wind in its most powerful form is a whirlwind. We prefer to live in a circle. The seasons go one into another and the particular phases of the moon are in a cycle. The whole world reawakens and comes to life. The hoop dance shows all this life,” he explained.

This performance is designed to emphasize “the brotherhood of man; the unity of spirit.”
The unifying experience culminated in the teaching of hoop dancing to a wide range of students and faculty from both the Middle and Upper Schools and then a dance that included the entire audience.

A special thanks to local resident and retired UCSD medical school professor, Oliver Jones, for bringing his friend to our campus. It was a remarkable experience.
