Congrats, Turing League Champions Torrey Techies!

By Upper School Science teacher Susan Domanico, Ph.D.
Congratulations to the Upper School robotics team, the Torrey Techies, who became Turing League Champions on Sunday, February 5 at Mater Dei High School in Chula Vista. Students wrapped up their qualification season with a big win in the Turing League for FIRST Tech Challenge. The team competed in three tournaments since early December, coming into Sunday's competition with two wins and one third place finish. This last competition was critical for advancing, and the team was ready.

Students have been designing and building in the Advanced Robotics class since late August, and their robot was optimized to collect and shoot softball-sized wiffle balls. The robot was also equipped with an autonomous program where it uses line and color sensors to find and discriminate between red and blue beacons. When it came time for the finals, the Torrey Techies were selected to partner with a robot that complemented their skills perfectly. Alongside the "Crow Force 5" robot, the teams battled the two best robots in the competition and defeated them twice in some of the highest scoring matches of the season.

As Turing League Champs, the Torrey Techies earned an invitation to the San Diego Regional Competition, which will be held on February 25 at Francis Parker School. A win there could send them to the West Super Regionals in Tacoma, Washington, where teams will compete for a bid at the World Championships!
