“I inspire greatness for a better world by guiding collective curiosity, by connecting us to new perspectives to create a dynamic worldview, and by supporting the informed asking of questions that drive our day-to-day lives.”
Knowing how to competently navigate and utilize a world of information is the key to creating well-informed global citizens. Rafa Eaton’s goal is to provide guidance to students’ independent learning and self-discovery through the library’s digital and physical programming.
Originally from Oregon, Mr. Eaton began his career at Portland State University and finished his Bachelor’s at The City College of New York, where he concentrated on English Literature and Judaic Studies. He received his Master’s Degree in Library Science from Drexel University in Philadelphia. Before joining La Jolla Country Day School, Mr. Eaton plied his trade across the US as a line cook and an archivist-trainee for the San Diego Museum of Us, Democracy Now! Productions, and Canyon Cinema.
In his free time he [still] enjoys cooking for his wife and two sons.
“I inspire greatness by promoting an environment where student-athletes work together in the classroom or on the field, giving feedback and encouraging one another as they explore complex mathematical concepts together in the classroom or perfect their skills on the field. I especially enjoy encouraging student-athletes to strive for excellence and to lead by example.”
John Edman joined La Jolla Country Day School in 1998, and he is constantly reinvigorated by the sense of family and camaraderie as faculty and students alike strive to make the world a better place. He loves that students have the chance to experience a wide variety of academic, athletic, artistic and service opportunities while also being encouraged to pursue their passions and become excellent in areas of special importance to them.
Mr. Edman graduated from Williams College with honors, earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics with a concentration in mathematics. After four years of teaching math and coaching baseball at his alma mater, Cranbrook Kingswood, in Michigan, he went on to earn his Master of Science in statistics from the University of Michigan while also serving as an assistant coach for the University of Michigan baseball team. He moved to San Diego in 1999 with his wife and three children, all of whom have been proud lifers at LJCDS.
Mr. Edman’s baseball teams have accumulated 330 wins, including 20 wins in six of the last 10 seasons. The Torreys have won five of the last nine Coastal Conference titles and won the CIF Championship in 2011. He has had 38 players compete collegiately and six play professionally including his son, Tommy Edman, who currently plays for the St. Louis Cardinals.
“I inspire greatness for a better world by empowering students to use their emerging Spanish skills to make meaningful, real-life connections outside of the classroom, and by challenging them to become better thinkers and communicators, and more informed global citizens.”
Meghan Edwards strongly believes that knowledge of a second (or third, or fourth!) language is a critical component to global citizenship, and that the study of world languages offers us a lens through which to better understand and connect with the communities around the world and at home who speak those languages. She strives to create an environment in which students feel comfortable and confident expressing themselves in Spanish and are equipped with the foundational skills they need to effectively communicate their ideas. Ms. Edwards is the Middle School world language department chair and currently teaches Spanish to seventh- and eighth-grade students, as well as serving as an eighth-grade advisor.
Ms. Edwards holds a Master of Arts in Latin American studies from the University of California, San Diego, and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and cultural studies from McGill University in Montreal, in her home country of Canada. She is fluent in Spanish and French, and has also studied Portuguese and German. She has lived, worked and/or studied in five countries, and has traveled to several more.
When Ms. Edwards is not teaching, she enjoys reading, yoga and trying out new recipes. She sometimes misses snowy winters, but a walk on the beach in January quickly reminds her of how much Southern California has to offer!
“I inspire greatness for a better world by helping students and athletes persevere through adversity. In the classroom or on the field, my goal is to help students realize their potential by encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone.”
As an assistant educator, Kyle Espejo has various roles in the Lower School. Every day, he supports the administrative staff and helps cultivate a safe place for students to learn and play.
When he joined La Jolla Country Day School in 2021, Mr. Espejo felt an immediate connection to the community because of the camaraderie and support from both families and staff.
When Mr. Espejo is not on campus coaching lacrosse or other after-school programs, he likes to spend his time adventuring. From beaches to mountain tops, he can be found soaking up the San Diego sun with his dog Kota.
“I inspire greatness for a better world by helping our students become self-aware to push their limits and overcome adversity and to take any situation they find themselves in as a learning and growing opportunity.”
Christian Evans, MAT, ATC, joined LJCDS in 2019 and believes that the health of our future relies on the health of our children. As the world evolves and we become more aware of the importance of being healthy as a whole, our education needs to evolve, too.
Mrs. Evans is a native San Diegan who attended another coastal league school before heading to Azusa Pacific University (APU) where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in athletic training. During her four years at APU, she served their men’s and women’s tennis teams, softball, football and men’s soccer teams. While there, the men’s soccer team went on to win their national title in the NAIA before switching to the NCAA. Mrs. Evans also served two different local high schools and a rehabilitation clinic during her time as a student athletic trainer at APU.
Upon graduating from APU, Mrs. Evans served her alma mater, Horizon, in various capacities, including teacher and head athletic trainer, over seven years before the school closed in 2017. She earned her Master of Arts in teaching from the Rosier School of Education at the University of Southern California.
Mrs. Evans enjoys spending time with her loving husband, bundles of energy sons and beautiful daughter. They enjoy going to various San Diego parks and beaches, attending concerts and traveling. They look forward to the opportunity of starting a family band and inspiring greatness through their music.
