Advisory and Peer Leader

Advisory Program

The Upper School boasts a vibrant, robust advisory program that serves as the centerpiece of the school’s commitment-to-character education. Upon entering the ninth grade, each student is assigned, based on common interests and passions, an advisor to oversee the student’s academic and social experience for all four years of the Upper School. The goal of the La Jolla Country Day School (LJCDS) Advisory Program, supported by the mission of the school, is to ensure that, by graduation, students have gained exposure to vital topics typically found outside traditional curricular units. Each week, advisors meet their students for a formal 40-minute session on Tuesdays and an informal “check-in” for 15 minutes on Thursdays. During the formal sessions, students engage in discussions, reflection and activities in the following six areas:

  • Academic Advising
  • Drug and Alcohol Education
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Ethics
  • Stress/Time Management
  • Digital Literacy and Social Media

Peer Leader Program

Our lauded Peer Leader Program assists Grade 9 students as they make their transition to Upper School. Beginning in the spring, rising twelfth graders complete a rigorous application and screening process designed to identify the strongest student leaders in the class. Elected peer leaders join a ninth grade advisory for the entire year to offer foundational support and plan group activities, all while improving hands-on leadership skills in the older students. Peer leaders meet once per week to plan advisory activities and debrief on their experiences.
