Educator of the Year

By Adrienne Sigeti, communications assistant
Congratulations to Upper School History teacher Jonathan Shulman who was recently named the 2018 Educator of the Year by the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club. Mr. Shulman was recognized for his compassion and dedication to his students and his leadership roles with the Torrey Mock Trial team and the director of La Jolla Country Day School’s Center for Excellence in Citizenship.

For the past 15 years, Mr. Shulman has served as a member of the Upper School history faculty, including 10 years as department chair. During his tenure at LJCDS, Mr. Shulman has developed long-lasting relationships with outside organizations, introducing students to elected officials, rising civic candidates, and thought leaders in local and global communities. Most notably, he empowers students to take civic action but to do so with balance and perspective.

Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs Colleen O’Boyle shares, “He inspires students to investigate the world. He promotes a dialogue that recognizes differing perspectives. Jonathan positions students to take action by modeling so in his own actions. And he communicates ideas on both sides of the aisle, allowing students to construct their own meaning. In short, our students see themselves as civic leaders because he shows them how. There are leaders, and then there is Jonathan Shulman. He works countless hours on behalf of our students and community. It is an honor and privilege to work with him.”

The Educator of the Year Award was created in 1999 as a means of recognizing and supporting the critical role of the people in our schools who have the most immediate and lasting impact on our kids. Each year, eight schools are invited to submit nominations from teachers and counselors. Administrators, teachers, parents and students are offered the opportunity to nominate a teacher or counselor they believe has made a special contribution to helping students grow academically and personally.

A big congratulations to Mr. Shulman for continuing La Jolla Country Day School’s legacy of civic engagement and inspiring future generations of young leaders.
