An LJCDS educator was recognized for her dedication and collaboration in the arts.

Congratulations to music educator Wendy Clemente who was named the 2019 Educator of the Year by the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club. Ms. Clemente was one of three winners selected from more than 600 nominated teachers and counselors from eight local elementary, middle and high schools.

Ms. Clemente has been inspiring students for 17 years at LJCDS. She is currently the lead vocal and instrumental music teacher for kindergarten through Grade 4. She is also a member of the theater production team for Grades 5–12 as the costume design lead. Her talent expands beyond sourcing and selecting the wardrobes and accessories for the shows. Ms. Clemente will also custom-design and sew costumes like the 30 dresses for Cinderella in 2015.

In summer 2019, Ms. Clemente will co-direct the musical, Annie Jr., starring children from kindergarten through Grade 12 for LJCDS’s summer program, Summer at Country Day.

“We are honored to have her presence, vision and passion at our school,” shares Cindy Bravo, director of visual and performing arts. “Her students love her energy and look forward to being a part of the musicals. Wendy wants us to experience the joy of music, and she provides her students with every opportunity to create a connection and share it with the world.”

“In my classes, students learn to use their singing voice,” says Ms. Clemente. “When you see a child singing confidently, without shame, they are so liberated. And I firmly believe that when a child sees the power of their singing voice, they also understand the power of their speaking voice. They recognize that their voice can be used to make art and to make the world a better place. A powerful voice can be used to advocate for the self and for others. A powerful voice can change the world.”

The Educator of the Year Award was created in 1999 as a means of recognizing and supporting individual educators who have demonstrated an exemplary contribution to education, in any form and at any level, with an emphasis on personal efforts and active involvement in helping students. The winners were honored during a special program on Friday, May 10.
