Music is a Universal Language

During spring break 2019, La Jolla Country Day School students took part in experiential education trips. Joe Palazo ’20 shares his experience in Hawaii.
Over spring break, I had the amazing opportunity to join the La Jolla Country Day School orchestra and choir trip to Hawaii. We toured Honolulu, sightseeing and performing at places such as the Naval Station Pearl Harbor and the Ala Moana Center. During our free time, we explored Kalakaua Avenue, swam at the beach, and even went to an authentic Hawaiian luau.

There was an unforgettable moment during the trip that really stood out and made the trip that much more memorable. During our first night in Hawaii, we walked out into the bustling street, and I remember one of the first things that caught my attention was this little girl, no older than nine, singing her heart out on the sidewalk. I was amazed that this child could perform with such grace, maturity and skill in front of all these people without even breaking a sweat. As I moved along the street, I noticed that she wasn’t the only performer out there. There were performers posted all the way down the street, each one of them sharing their craft with the world. Being a performer myself, I felt a connection to each one of them and it put into perspective how music really is the universal language. To say the least, I loved seeing the street performers. Much love to Michael, a street performer who sang for us and helped us win our scavenger hunt.
