Senior Spotlight: Nicholas Doupsas

By Jacob Maciel, marketing and communications intern
Get to know one of our graduating seniors and his passion for science and the performing arts.

Four years ago when Nicholas Doupsas ’20 joined LJCDS, he knew he could create a lasting impact. Nicholas has the drive to dive deep beneath the surface of ideas and concepts. His curiosity has served him well as a performing artist and scientist.

Science has been Nicholas’ main passion during his time at LJCDS. Specifically, his love for neuroscience has flourished.

New to LJCDS and the west coast, Nicholas stepped onto campus the first day of school with the goal to create a neuroscience and futurism club. He created the Future of Science club with the assistance of science teachers Mr. Padgett and Mr. Uyeda. The club has since brought distinguished speakers to campus and club members have attended the Annual Society for Neuroscience conference.

“I find it [science] incredibly fascinating. It is a rapidly growing, exciting and promising field that I hope to make my own discoveries in,” shares Nicholas.

In fall 2018, Nicholas reached out to organizers of the Annual Society for Neuroscience, and the Future of Science club was invited to attend the conference in November 2018.

Through the LJCDS alumni and parent network, Nicholas has pursued an opportunity to receive hands-on experience in a professional laboratory. During one summer, he worked in the lab with Dr. Jena Hales, an LJCDS parent and neuroscientist at the University of San Diego. As the first high school student to work with her, Nicholas collaborated with college students and helped lead a novel time duration object discrimination task to investigate the role of hippocampal time cells in temporal memory.

Nicholas is also a devoted performing artist. He is involved in the concert choir as a pianist as well as a singer in the Madrigals Honors choir. Singing and playing the piano serve as creative outlets for Nicholas to release stress and bring joy to his community.

“At Country Day I have learned how to ask more, be curious, see what connections others have, be open and dip my feet in different activities because you never know what you might find,” explains Nicholas.

Nicholas finds the sense of community in every activity he is involved in whether it’s playing on the varsity tennis team, serving as a leader in the Green Team, or as a performer and aspiring scientist.

Nicholas will be attending John Hopkins University in fall 2020.
