La Jolla Country Day School Women’s Basketball

Season Outlook 2013-2014

It looks to be yet another exciting year for Lady Torreys Basketball. The La Jolla Country Day Torreys are primed for the 2013-2014 season, and with good reason. The Lady Torreys are coming off their 13th League and CIF championships. Despite the loss of Kelsey Plum (University of Washington) and Brianne Yasukochi (UC Davis) the Lady Torreys seek to pick up right where the squad left off. The Torreys have 8 returning players, including three starters and 5 rotation players. This year’s roster includes 3 returning seniors: Sabrina Callahan, a returning starter and All-League selection. She is a 6’0” versatile forward who knows how to score and can cause havoc on both ends for the floor. Sabrina signed her national letter of intent with the U.C. Santa Barbara.   Also returning is much improved, combo guard Hadiyah Muhammad, a tough lock down defender who can score in transition and senior Taylor Johnson jet quick forward who knows how to score. Returning from the junior class is a very talented and crafty point guard Melanie Quijano. She has amazing playmaking skills and high basketball IQ, and is one of the best point guards in the county. Also returning from the junior class is Cydney Collins a 5’11” power forward who has 3 point range and gives us inside scoring and rebounding and Isabel Aguirre a versatile combo guard with 3 point range and a jet quick first step. She will also sharing duties as the Torreys’ point guard. The Torreys return two  talented sophomores, who will be major impact players for us this season. Mai-Loni Henson returns as an All-League selection and the Torreys 2nd leading scorer from 2012-13 season. Mai-Loni is a 6’0” combo guard with a great mid-range game, deep 3 point range and she has the ability to battle down low in the post. Also returning from the sophomore class is Mariana Ecija. She is an explosive athlete who emerged as one of the team’s leading scorers this summer. She can shoot the three as well as a mid-range jumper and can finish with either hand.  With their valuable experience and three returning starters, the Lady Torreys expect to contend for a 14th CIF title and a trip to the State Tournament.

The Lady Torreys will look to run an up-tempo offense and hard-nosed full court defense this year. This team has the ability to control the pace of the game. Offensively the Lady Torreys are multidimensional and have the ability to shoot 3’s, score in the post, and attack the basket.  With the competitive schedule they will face, the Lady Torreys should find themselves back in the State and national Rankings. The team will open up their preseason schedule on December 5th in the 11th Annual Sweet Sixteen Invitational Basketball Tournament at La Jolla Country Day School.
