La Jolla Country Day School Women’s Basketball
Season Outlook 2014-2015
It looks to be yet another exciting year for Lady Torreys Basketball. This team may look new after losing three seniors from last year’s Regional Championship Team: Sabrina Callahan at UCSB, Hadiyah Muhammad at Academy of Arts, and Taylor Johnson at Alabama. However, with four returning starters, a new standout sophomore, and six freshman faces, the Lady Torreys are looking to pick up right where they left off, continuing the winning tradition.
Returning to the Lady Torreys are seniors Cydney Collins a 5’11” power forward who has 3 point range and provides inside scoring and rebounding, and Isabel Aguirre, a versatile combo guard with 3 point range and a quick first step. As team captains, they will look to lead their team on and off the court. Joining them are two outstanding juniors: Captain Mai-Loni Henson returns as a first team All-league, First team All-CIF, All-State Selection, and the Torreys leading scorer from 2013-14 season. Mai-Loni is a 6’0” combo guard with a great mid-range game, deep 3 point range, and the ability to battle down low in the post. Mai-Loni has verbally committed to the University of Washington. Also returning in the junior class is Mariana Ecija, a jet quick, explosive athlete who emerged as one of the team’s leading scorers last season. She is a versatile combo guard who can shoot the three and get to the rim and score. At the forward position, the Lady Torreys have a standout sophomore Alaysia Styles, ranked as one of the top sophomores in the country. At 6’2, Alaysia can run the floor, handle the ball, has a great mid-range jumper, and can battle down low.
This year, the Torreys are proud to introduce their sensational freshman class! Full of mature, athletic, high basketball IQ players, this group looks to make an immediate impact. At the guard spot, the Torreys introduce Kiera Oakry and Jayda Villareal, and at the forward position, the Torreys introduce, Bianca Notarainni, Kendal Ellenbeck, Nicole McDermott, and Shayla Love.
The Lady Torreys will look to run an up-tempo offense and hard-nosed full court defense this year. This team has the ability to control the tempo of the game. Offensively the Lady Torreys are multidimensional and have the ability to shoot 3’s, score in the post, and attack the basket. With the competitive schedule they will face, the Lady Torreys should find themselves back in the State and national rankings. The team will open up their preseason schedule on December 3rd in the 12th Annual Sweet Sixteen Invitational Basketball Tournament at La Jolla Country Day School and then will compete in the prestigious 2014 NIKE Tournament of Champions being held December 18th -22nd.
