If Franklin Had Facebook

During his lifetime, Benjamin Franklin became the most famous American in the world. How did he do that? We’ll explore how mapping Ben Franklin’s social network helps us to see how people in the past became famous—and how you can become famous today.

The LJCDS community is invited to join us as we welcome Caroline Winterer, professor of American History and Anthony P. Meier Family Professor in the humanities at Stanford, where she is also director of the Stanford Humanities Center. The author of four books and over 30 articles, Ms. Winterer specializes in the transmission of ideas between Europe and the Americas in the era from Columbus to the Civil War. Her most recent book is American Enlightenments: Pursuing Happiness in the Age of Reason (Yale University Press, 2016). To learn more about American Enlightenments, listen to her conversation with Michael Krasny on KQED's Forum.

Caroline Winterer has also curated two exhibits of rare books and artifacts for the National Constitution Center and Stanford University. She received an American Ingenuity Award from the Smithsonian Institution for mapping the social network of Benjamin Franklin.
