Third Graders Visit the Fleet Science Center

By Jennifer Russell, third grade teacher
Third graders are finishing their studies on colonial America and will soon be packing their wagons to head west as pioneers. In preparation for the westward expansion unit, students went to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park on Wednesday, January 18 to watch an IMAX movie about the historic journey of Lewis and Clark.

Students were able to get a sense of the grueling 8,000 mile expedition and see what the land looked like, how the explorers dressed, the equipment that was used and the dangers on the journey. Along the way, Lewis and Clark encountered the homeland of many Native American tribes. Students saw that if it were not for the help of many tribes, the journey would not have been successful.

While at the museum the third graders also explored the many hands-on science exhibits, such as an interactive tornado simulator, the Fit-a-Brick Zone, where students used their creativity to build their own creations with LEGO, and an energy exhibit that allowed them to explore different ways to generate electricity, learn how solar panels work and ways to conserve energy.
