Lunar New Year Celebration

By Communications
Xin Nian Kuai Le! That’s Chinese for Happy New Year. This Lunar New Year, starting Saturday, January 28, marks the start of the Year of the Rooster. The Middle School celebrated cultural activities throughout the week thanks to the parent-led Chinese Culture Workshop, student-run Asian Explorers Club, parent volunteers and faculty members.

The week started with surprise red envelopes on students’ lockers. Red envelopes, or hongbao, symbolize luck and fortune for the new year. Red lanterns, artwork and other decorations hung around Middle School and in the Jacobs Family Library lobby. A display in the library featured books on Chinese culture and history. Red is commonly used as a symbol to ward off bad luck and evil spirits and red and gold are symbols of fortune and happiness in Chinese culture, especially during new year celebrations. Students used traditional Chinese ink and brush to try their hand at Chinese calligraphy, an ancient art form emphasizing motion and the dynamism of life simply by using the flow of ink and brush on paper. Parent volunteers also translated students’ names in Chinese characters and the winners of the Chinese New Year poster competition were announced.

Congratulations:
First Place: Bianca Wong ’21
Second Place: Maya Krishnan ’24
Third Place was a tie: Jolie Hoang-Rappaport ’24 and Lara Mirkazemi ’22
Honorable mentions: Eric Ye ’22 and Emily Bergan ’22

The week ended with Asian Spirit Day with students encouraged to wear red and gold and a performance by a professional lion dance group. The lion dance has been part of Chinese culture for thousands of years and is a symbol of power, wisdom and good fortune. Chinese traditions say that the lion dance chases away evil spirits and brings happiness, longevity and good luck. Lower School students also celebrated Lunar New Year and were treated to a special performance by a lion dance group as well.

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Have a lucky and prosperous new year!
