Science, Technology and Spain

By Spanish teacher Jaquelin Dutson
Spanish IV students recently connected via Skype with Juan Pablo Esquivel, Ph.D., a research scientist at the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona, located on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Bellaterra, Spain. He spoke with students about the role of science and innovation, his experience as an international researcher and his current role at the National Microelectronics Center in Catalonia, Spain.

Dr. Esquivel is dedicated to creating a better world through his scientific research and innovation projects and was named one of the top innovators under 35 by MIT technology review. He was a recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation seed grant to develop clean water monitoring devices. He is a senior research fellow at the University of Washington and visiting scholar at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (Germany's largest research organization ). Dr. Esquivel is also co-founder and scientific advisor of Fuelium, a company dedicated to the production of biodegradable batteries for single-use applications.

As the class concludes their unit on science and technology and Spain, one of the goals of this video conference was to further develop student’s understanding of these topics by connecting with a specialist in the field who is also a member of the Spanish speaking community. During the Skype session, students asked questions in Spanish and learned more about Dr. Esquivel's research projects and the impact of science and innovation at a global scale.
