French-ship Week

By Middle and Upper School French teacher Maya Torres
French is spoken by more than 274 million people. It is the official language of more countries—33—than any other language except English. And every March 20, all 77 member states of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie observe “International Francophonie Day,” a celebration of French language and Francophone culture.

LJCDS’ community of Francophiles, made up of students, parents, faculty and staff, all came together to enjoy a fun, fulfilling week of everything French. It was celebrated “la gastronomie” by serving the Middle Schoolers croissants, crepes, macaroons, and cheese and baguettes, all supplied by parent volunteers and local restaurants. Parents decorated the tables with French tablecloths and fresh flowers. Francophonie Week also meant a French menu at the lunch pavilion, culminating in a Mardi Gras theme on Friday with students wearing colorful masks and sampling the chewy, caramel French candy Carambar.

For extra Parisian effect, students had a chance to take a photo with berets and scarves in white, red and blue in front of or on a Vespa with French monuments drawn in the background. Arts, sports, science and literature were also celebrated by students who choose a famous Francophone to research and made posters to hang in the Middle School. A world map highlighting every French-speaking country graced the wall as well.

The most delightful aspect of the fait accompli was the wonderful way in which the entire community came together. I am deeply appreciative of the students’ bountiful enthusiasm, and the students and I are grateful for the tremendous help and involvement of the parent volunteers and the entire Middle School staff. Un grand merci à tous.

In the student's own words:

“French week helped us learn how fun the French tradition is. We learned about their food and what they do in their free time. It was a really fun event and I hope we do it again.”

“French week was a very fun experience for me. I enjoyed all of the activities and it was fun and exciting to learn more about France! I hope to have another French week next year!!”

“For me, French week was a total success! I felt that it informed many people of how fun and exciting French is. It gave everyone a taste of the amazing culture there is in France, but I think it should be a little bit longer. There are so many more things we could do and I don't think one week is enough time to cover it all.”
