Ready to Make a Difference in the World

By Head of School Gary Krahn, Ph.D.
We could not be more proud of the 116 scholars, artists and athletes of character in the class of 2017. As our graduates walked across the stage of the Amphitheater on Friday, June 2, they graduated from La Jolla Country Day School with the ability to handle complexity, diversity of thought and change. Their experiences within the classroom have varied, but they have all developed a sense of social responsibility along with both intellectual and practical skills.

Our promise, Inspiring Greatness for a Better World, is a commitment to our students and families no matter when they start their journey here. Some of our graduates came to LJCDS when they were three years old, some in Middle School and others arrived recently. Each of our families fulfilled their promise by bringing a child or young adult of character who was willing to work hard, allowing us to provide access to resources and mentors in a “what if” environment that surrounds the student with the uppermost opportunity to achieve greatness.

Our faculty and staff regularly engage in rich dialogue with one another about cultural struggles; academic content; required readings; ideal school start and finish times; social networks; citizenship; multidisciplinary opportunities; mental wellness; college prep; etc. Each conversation is designed to create an optimal student experience and prepare students to navigate the complexity of our world. We help students develop the habits of mind and the habits of heart to anticipate and effectively respond to the uncertainties and opportunities of a rapidly changing technological, social, political and economic world. Graduates of LJCDS are empowered to:

  • think and act creatively;
  • effectively collaborate within diverse teams;
  • treat all humans with dignity;
  • recognize moral issues and apply ethical considerations in decision making;
  • listen, read, speak and write effectively;
  • and demonstrate the capability and desire to pursue continued intellectual development.
As our graduates begin a new chapter in their lives, they will encounter a world that will undergo dramatic change. They will participate in a society that will demand flexibility and continuous learning. All over the world, people and their governments, organizations and businesses seek to build their creative and innovative capacities. LJCDS graduates are well prepared to merge the insights of social science, humanities, arts and athletics, while leveraging technologies and science for exploration, innovation and enterprise. With these strengths, our graduates can expect to play an important role in creating a better and more just world. Congratulations to our class of 2017!
