Congratulations, Ms. Bial!

Head of School Gary Krahn, Ph.D., presented Ginny Bial, fourth-grade teacher, with the 2017 BAK’D Apple Award on June 14 during the final faculty and staff meeting.

The BAK’D Apple Award recognizes a faculty or staff member who makes special contributions to students’ total personal growth, extends themselves on a personal level to be a friend and mentor to students, identifies and develops unrecognized talent in students, or who has such a passion for their area of expertise that students are inspired to share that enthusiasm.

“Ms. Bial has consistently, over her 24 years of teaching fourth grade at LJCDS, given her all for the benefit of her students,” shared Dr. Krahn during the presentation. “She could always be found before and after school, giving of her own time to help students with whatever they needed, be it math, writing, a project or social and emotional support. Many mornings before school, a steady stream of visitors were seen in Ms. Bial’s classroom from both the Middle and Upper Schools. She is one of the teachers mentioned most by seniors as they look back on their time at LJCDS, and this underscores the close relationships and connections that she forms and maintains with her students. She has been an inspiration to countless children and their families!”

A Middle Schooler shared his thoughts on Ms. Bial:

The best teacher I’ve ever had was Ms. Bial. I like Ms. Bial the best because she was very kind, funny and made me a great student by pushing me to my limits and believing in me. She expected the best out of me, and by making sure I was always listening and staying on task, I was able to always be on task and listening. (Well, maybe not always but most of the time). I could tell that Ms. Bial had great experience and wisdom, and I could tell that she really cared about me and all of my classmates.

The BAK’D Apple Award was proposed and established by the Rubenson family whose two sons graduated from LJCDS (Aaron ’92 and Ben ’95). The name is a combination of the first letters of each of their first names (Ben, Aaron, Kathie and David) and apple refers to their home in Julian and their apple orchard, where they have invited faculty to join them to harvest apples over the years.
