Third Grade India Showcase

By third grade teacher Jennifer Russell
Third graders wrapped up their study of India and invited their families for a showcase on June 8 to share what they learned about the Himalaya Mountains, the ancient Indus Valley, the development of the base ten number system, the spice route, the building of the Taj Mahal, the British Raj, Gandhi’s peaceful fight for freedom, Mother Teresa’s efforts to serve those in need, as well as animals native to India, such as the peacock and Bengal Tigers. They also learned about various religions, holidays, festivals and customs of India. Written reports and art pieces related to their studies were put into a book and families were invited to view the collection of work.

In conjunction with the study of India, third graders created collaborative mandalas using chalk in art class that were displayed near the science and Spanish classrooms for viewing. Students also experienced traditional Indian music by learning about the tabula and participating in drumming lessons in order to perform during the showcase. In computer science, third graders identified endangered animals in India and researched possible solutions. “Wild” Wes Mason, an experienced conservationist, researcher, and educator, visited with the third grade students in May and shared the importance of conservation and the interconnectedness of food webs.

My class also experienced claymation, a stop-motion animation where each piece and character is made out of clay. Based on Indian tales we read in class, students collaborated in groups to retell the stories by writing scripts. They then applied their new typing skills to type the scripts. After creating backgrounds and clay figures, students photographed scenes for their stop-motion animation movies. Finally, the children practiced reading fluency skills to narrate the movies and used various Foley sound effects to reproduce everyday sounds.
