Torreys in the News

By Jeff Hutzler, athletic director
Within the first three weeks of The San Diego Union Tribune (UT) honoring Athletes of the Week this new school year, LJCDS students have been featured all three weeks. Congratulations! That is remarkable considering there are tens of thousands of student-athletes from 130 high schools in the CIF San Diego section.

Football standout Anthony Bland ’20 caught 14 passes for 175 yards and tacked on 90 more yards in the return game to propel LJCDS to a 26-24 win over Classical Academy. Volleyball star Abby Asmus ’18 racked up 19 kills and 5 blocked shots to lead LJCDS over La Jolla High School. Read the August 29 story here. Additionally, the girls volleyball team was ranked #2 in the San Diego Section rankings. See the results here.

Volleyball standout Samantha Francis ’21 made 32 kills and 17 blocks in matches versus University City and Bishop’s School and is the second of Coach Ogle’s players to be recognized by the UT in as many weeks. Read the September 5 story here. The volleyball team also won the September Classic Tournament with freshman sensation Samantha Francis leading the way (11 kills and six blocks in the championship match versus Our Lady of Peace). Samantha was selected as the September Classic Tournament’s MVP with Makana Kowalski ‘20 and Abby Ausmus ’18 also making the all-tournament team. Read the complete story here.

Blaire Koman ’20 has led our field hockey team to a 3-1 early season mark and scored five total goals in wins over large enrollment schools El Cajon Valley High School and Granite Hills High School. Tennis standout Catherine Murray ’19 teamed up with Rustana Fogler ’21 to sweep five doubles sets from tennis powers Poway High School and La Jolla High School. Read the September 12 story here.
