Human Library in the News

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
La Jolla Country Day School held its first Human Library™ event presented by the Center for Excellence in Citizenship on Friday, November 3 in the library. Sixteen guests were featured as “books,” and “readers” spent 20 minutes learning their story or engaged in a personal conversation. Books included a Burmese refugee, rabbi, activist and veteran, radio show producer, assault survivor, millennial entrepreneur, adventure journalist and award-winning podcast host and more.

Now worldwide, the Human Library™ started in Denmark as an anti-violence activity during a summer festival in 2000 with 75 books and was an instant success in bringing people together to challenge stereotypes and prejudices by encouraging dialogue to build positive relationships.

Upper School world language teacher Nathalie Rachel-Gueirard helped organize the event and shared, “Our first Human Library was a great success and surpassed our expectations. All participants, books and readers, left the library with a big smile on their faces. Meaningful connections were made, readers broadened their horizons, and books wished they could have been readers as well. We can’t wait to have our second Human Library™ event in the spring with even more books.”

The event was recently featured in the La Jolla Light. Read more.
