Giving Back: First Semester Recap

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
Community Service is an important aspect of the La Jolla Country Day School culture. The first half of the 2017–2018 school year has been a busy one for all students from the Tiny Torreys to our seniors.

The community service learning program aims to teach and inspire our young scholars to develop a sense of social responsibility, empathy and connection to their local and global community. With Upper Schoolers already logging close to 2,000 volunteer hours this year, it has been an inspiring and productive first half of the school year. In addition to hosting a blood drive, bake sales and collections of food, toiletries, school supplies and books, here are a few initiatives that occurred from September through December:

  • Feeding America: Lower School students sorted over 200 pounds of strawberries as part of the Healthy Backpack Program

  • Community Event Fundraiser: In November, students organized teams for the JDRF One Walk, benefiting juvenile diabetes research and Padres Pedal the Cause, benefiting cancer research

  • Coastal Cleanup: Tenth graders spent their retreat cleaning up Mission Bay beach

  • Sherman Academy: Eleventh graders spent their retreat by helping a local school clean their garden and assisting teachers in preparing their classrooms for the school year

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Wake Up and Walk on campus, Dig for the Cure volleyball fundraiser, cheer station at the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk and bake sale. The community raised nearly $22,00 for the San Diego chapter of Susan G. Komen.

  • Halloween Carnival at St. Vincent de Paul: Upper School students organized and ran a party for the children living at the homeless shelter

  • Tiny Torreys made special cards and treats to thank the LJCDS Operations team and put together fruit baskets for the firefighters across the street to thank them for keeping everyone safe.

  • Operation Gratitude: Lower, Middle and Upper School students wrote letters and collected items that were delivered to the VA hospital and sent over 250 pounds of candy to troops overseas

  • Disaster Relief: The senior class is dedicating their yearlong fundraising efforts to the Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts. They are working with SBP to help bring relief to those affected.

  • Sports 4 Exceptional Athletes: LJCDS hosted the bocce ball and flag football tournament for special needs athletes for the 20th year

This is just a sample of a long list of service activities and organizations that our students supported this year. The LJCDS community will conclude 2017 by bringing smiles to several hundred children in the foster care system who may not otherwise receive any holiday gifts through the Giving Tree project.

“I am really proud of our students for their interest in bettering the world through service,” shares Community Service Learning Coordinator Hadley Zeavin. “La Jolla Country Day School’s service program is important in that our students know it is in their power to truly make positive changes in their communities.”

The community service learning program’s goal is to instill the lifelong habit of service in every student to make the world a better place.
