Defining Boundaries, a Photography Exhibit

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
The Museum of Photographic Arts’ (MOPA) 12th Annual Juried Youth Exhibition, Defining Boundaries, features the works of three La Jolla Country Day School students: Abby Ausmus ’18, Vivian Hong ’19 and Shannon Twomey ’20. Their photos were three of 100 works selected out of a record 674 entries from students in Grades K-12 across San Diego County and Tijuana.

This is the second consecutive year that Abby’s work has been chosen. Her shot last year was also featured on MOPA’s promotional banner.

“This year’s challenge for the MOPA student showcase was much more conceptual in nature and was also more competitive,” said photography/graphic design teacher Bruce Fayman. “I was so happy to see these students rise to that challenge and produce such powerful pieces.”

The student artwork explores a range of topics including physical, emotional and societal boundaries. Some artwork shows boundaries as positive and protective, while others show them as limiting and binding.

The theme is selected by MOPA's Department of Visual Learning team each year,” shares Danielle Lewis-Richardson, MOPA’s marketing and communications manager. “There are many considerations for selecting topics, but they ultimately want themes that will challenge participants to think conceptually. Themes can come from important connections to other MOPA exhibitions, suggestions from past participants, relevant contemporary issues, and from MOPA's many community partners.”

The exhibit has been so popular that it has been extended through March 18. The theme for next year is "Sound" and MOPA will start accepting entries soon.
