By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
With the Lunar New Year falling on Friday, February 16, the Upper School hosted a series of celebrations from Monday, February 12–Wednesday, February 14 and Middle School celebrations kicked off on Wednesday, February 7. Common areas were decorated in traditional red and gold and the library displayed featured books. Even the history and English departments took part in interdisciplinary curriculum throughout the week.

  • Professor Barry Naughton, Sokwanlok Chair of Chinese International Affairs at UC San Diego, spoke about “Contemporary China” at the Upper School assembly.
  • Middle Schoolers competed in a tug-of-war, discussed Chinese arts in Community Dialog and received a Chinese-themed goody bag in advisory.
  • Student-led fair during lunch featured 44 presentations by Mandarin class students, including six culture tables of food, dog origami, calligraphy, tea ceremony, Chinese yoyo/shuttlecock and a photo booth.
  • Middle and Upper Schoolers enjoyed a lively lion dance during lunchtime.

Thank you to all those who were involved, especially parents Lailani Mirkazemi and Sue Zhong, as well as Upper School Head Joe Cox, Ph.D., Upper School world language teacher Amy Chang, world language chair Eva Power, Upper School history teacher Jonathan Shulman, the history and English departments and the entire operations team.
