French Week

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
March is le mois de la Francophonie, the official month of Francophonie, a global event that celebrates the richness and diversity of the French language and culture. Middle and Upper Schoolers celebrated the week of March 12 with food, games and music.

During Milk Break, students enjoyed croissants, French cheeses and baguettes, madeleines and macarons, plus special French menu selections at lunch. Tables were set up by the Pavilion with a variety of games like Jenga to test or learn new French vocabulary words, a memory game, fun facts and Jeopardy. Students playing French Monopoly tried to buy property on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and some tried pétanque, a favorite French sport.

Sylvie Coulange, born in the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe, spoke with students in Upper School French III and French Intensive class about her life in the Caribbean, her passion for cooking and aquatic sports, and racial tensions on the island. The week ended with a performance from the Bayou Brothers, a zydeco band, during lunchtime. Middle Schoolers couldn’t resist the pull of the music and joined the band on stage, playing instruments and dancing.
