Athletics Highlights Spring 2018

By Jeff Hutzler, athletic director
Find out how our Torreys have been making the news this spring!

Scholar, artist and athlete of character Dean LaDrido ’18 was featured in an article on the front page of the San Diego Union-Tribune sports page April 16. Dean is a high flier in the classroom, on the stage and on the field, and will play lacrosse at Swarthmore College next year. Read the complete article here.

Congratulations to football stars Michael Chandler ’18 and Spencer Alligood ’18 who were honored as National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Leader-Athletes. Recipients of this extremely prestigious award must be excellent not only on the field but also in the classroom and in their community. Read about the awards in this La Jolla Light article. Both Torreys were selected All-Coastal League this fall and are outstanding students. Spencer will play football at Tufts University next fall.

Congratulations to lacrosse standout Wynton Bastian ’19 who has been selected as a San Diego Union-Tribune Athlete of the Week. Wynton scored an amazing 16 goals in three games during spring break. He has committed to play at Providence College after graduation. Read the complete story here.

Baseball stalwart Austin Mowery ’18 recorded eight hits in 11 at-bats and was a San Diego Union-Tribune Athlete of the Week while school was out for spring break. See the full list here. Austin will play baseball for Columbia University next year.

Former LJCDS softball (and volleyball and basketball) great Taylor Johnson ’14 has continued her championship ways, on and off the field, at Francis Marion University (South Carolina). She has started every game for the past three seasons as a shortstop, is batting .386 and leads the team in stolen bases. Off the field, Taylor has been inducted into the Political Science Honors Society (Pi Sigma Alpha) and the History Honors Society (Phi Alpha Theta).

San Diego is to high school baseball what Texas is to high school football. Proof of this is that there are currently a whopping 30 former San Diego preps playing baseball in the Pac12. Former Torrey great Alfonso Rivas ’15 is batting .342 with two home runs, seven doubles and 29 RBI’s for the University of Arizona. He is featured in this article about San Diego players in the Pac12.

Former LJCDS volleyball star Arela Williams ’14 is completing her college career at McKendree University and will compete for the University of East London as she pursues her master’s degree in exercise science next year.
