New Perspectives in Peru

By Meghan Edwards, Middle School world language teacher
On March 21, 18 Middle School students and three faculty members embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. The destination: the Andean town of Ollantaytambo, nestled into the Sacred Valley of Peru at just above 9,000 feet. Historically an important resting point for those traveling the extensive network of Inca trails leading to Machu Picchu, the town retains importance as a vibrant community where past and present intersect.

Students participated in a 10-day program run by World Leadership School, an organization that exists to “empower young leaders to find innovative solutions to the world’s pressing problems.” While on the program, students developed a sense of historical context for themselves by visiting several important archaeological sites, such as Machu Picchu, the agricultural terraces of Moray and the expansive Sacsaywamán ruins in Cusco. While the group stayed together at a central location, students had the opportunity to gain a unique perspective into contemporary life in Ollantaytambo as they were welcomed into the homes of local families, where they shared several meals, participated in household activities and games, and were included in celebrations. They also worked on community projects with three local nonprofits: Sacred Valley Health, Kuska School and Awamaki, a women’s artisan cooperative.

I believe strongly in the power of experiential learning to transform individuals of all ages, and as program leader, I had the privilege of witnessing the curiosity, determination and openness with which these young people approached this adventure. Students were challenged daily to step outside of their comfort zones, confront prior assumptions, break through language barriers and work together as a cohesive unit. They built relationships and were exposed to an incredible array of leadership styles, and were able to learn directly from strong local leaders who are affecting change in their community. LJCDS exists to inspire greatness for a better world; what better way to embody that mission than to have students make connections outside the walls of our campus and explore their potential, passions and purpose?
