Model United Nations

By Sara Bivin, Middle School World Language teacher
Model United Nations (MUN) is an opportunity for students to attend a simulation of the United Nations, representing a nation or person in a variety of committees, where they assume the position of their assigned country and debate two to three assigned topics for the conference. MUN is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about the world around them, international politics, and many of the issues world leaders face today, as well as test out their public speaking, research and writing skills. When attending conferences, delegates also get to meet and interact with students not only from other California high schools but international schools as well.

TorreyMUN began with five Middle School students three years ago, attending the San Diego Regional Junior MUN, and has grown into an Upper School Flex Time advised by me and Cortney Golub, Upper School history and social science teacher. We began this year by attending TritonMUN at UC San Diego in October and ended the season with TritonMUN’s spring conference the weekend of April 21-23. In between, students attended BruinMUN at UC Los Angeles, as well as BMUN at UC Berkeley in February.

As our team has grown through hard work and dedication, we have seen our students grow as researchers, debaters and negotiators. Their hard work became evident when we took home eight research awards at BMUN:

  • Elizabeth Thorell ’20 and Sofia Besharati ’20 (ECOFIN)
  • Zakary Koenigs ’20 and Sydney Strawn ’20 (SPECPOL)
  • Garrett Fadul ’20 and Jake Kagnoff ’20 (SPECPOL)
  • Matthew Wirtz ’20 and Lauren Ziment ’20 (DISEC)
  • Honorable Mention for our dual delegation, Nikita Nair ’20 and Dallas Fadul ’21, in the World Health Organization.

This past weekend at TritonMUN was by far one of our best:

  • Nikita Nair ’20 and Matthew Wirtz ’20 (two of our student founders) received Best Delegate awards
  • Lauren Ziment ’20 received an Honorable Mention
  • Sophia Williams ’18 received a Research award
  • The team as a whole received Outstanding Medium (sized) delegation.

We are looking forward to expanding to East Coast and international conferences over the next two years, as well as growing as a team and learning about new and exciting ways to address issues and learn about them from multiple perspectives.
