Summer Internships

La Jolla Country Day School values connecting students to the world and the world to the students. What better way to connect students to local companies and organizations than through internships. In summer 2018, 12 Upper School students procured summer internships with various organizations in San Diego to explore their passions and gain practical work experience.

Hosted by the LJCDS internship program, students were presented with 12 different opportunities, including positions in portfolio management and governance, marketing, programming, event planning, accounting, human resources and engineering.

Over 70 applications were submitted by 27 students for the opportunity to participate in the program to gain experience in a general or specific field and explore potential career paths.

“Through this program, students not only go through a real interview and selection process,” shares Assistant Head of School for Design & Innovation Matt Abbondanzio, “but, if selected, they are signing up for a significant four to eight-week experience, which allows students to sink their teeth into a project. This was intentional to not only give students a better understanding of a specific career but to also put something substantial on their college applications.”

Melika Mirbod ’19 worked with nonprofit Miracle Babies helping with fundraising for their October gala. She attended executive gala committee meetings and wrote emails to secure sponsorships and procure auction items. “Overall, I learned a lot from the experience. I realized how important it is to work as a team when planning events like this one to have a great outcome,” she says.

Jared Mindel ’18 interned as an accountant at Symbient Product Development. He spent a majority of his days cataloging data, organizing documents, executing financial transactions and creating financial reports. “My experience prepared me enormously for the business world in which I hope to work later in life,” he says. “Beyond standard tasks, my internship showed me an office setting in its natural form, though Symbient is certainly a unique firm. I saw how employees from different departments would interact with each other to build, market, sell and catalog a successful product.”

Leah Weiser ’20 served as programming development intern at the Center for Women’s Leadership at the University of San Diego. Her reflection on the “Power of Acceptance” was featured on USD’s website.

A special thanks for the time and generosity of our parents and company contacts who were instrumental in opening their business and offering this opportunity, including Rita Abbati Albert P’20 ’22 ’25, Doug Bryant P’22, Scott and Randi Castanon P’19, Marjan Daneshmand P’23, Chris Richey P’16 ’19, Lorri Sulpizio, Ph.D., P’21 ’23 ’26 ’29 and Devin Topp.
