Supporting the Arts: Country Day Arts Alliance

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
CDAA is building community by supporting the arts.
With a great turnout for the first parent education workshop in the ceramic studio and the all-school Family Flix event showing of Coco, the Country Day Arts Alliance's (CDAA) new initiatives are off to a positive start. CDAA is a group composed of parents who share a common interest in supporting the visual and performing arts department (VAPA), including all divisions of dance, drama, band, orchestra, choir and visual arts.

“Community is first and foremost on our minds and both the parents and our educators wanted more interaction,” shares Director of Visual and Performing Arts Cindy Bravo. “The parent education workshops are bringing them together and allowing a different relationship to be formed. To see the camaraderie and joy on the parents’ faces is priceless. Their senses are activated, and they are learning something new, building relationships with the teachers and other parents.”

The ceramics parent workshop was so successful, there is a request for a part two. Keep an eye open for a parent workshop in a different medium in the spring. Look for more Family Flix nights in December and 2019.

Another new initiative includes hosting dinners for students during the time between the end of the school day and before a performance. This allows student-performers to stay on campus, eat dinner, and have time to relax before going on stage. And for on-campus events, a decorated backdrop will be provided for students and their families and friends to memorialize the event.

“CDAA strives to provide access and support to VAPA programs aiming for art to be an enduring place in students' lives,” shares committee member Dr. Sandra Coufal P’16 ’23. Any parent or guardian of an LJCDS student can be a part of CDAA, from Tiny Torreys through Upper School.

More gap dinners are planned through December and volunteers are welcome to sign up to help. In addition to Dr. Coufal, the core members of CDAA are Gisele Bonitz P’19, Aline Buzzarello P’19, Nadine Ditsworth P’33, Lisa Kanetake P’22 ’23, Huiyi Paterson P’21 ’25 and Anna Tarvyd Klein P’24.
