Art and Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards honor creative teens in Grades 7–12 with Gold and Silver keys and Honorable Mention awards. Congratulations to Natalie Pellette ’19 for earning a Silver Key for “Distortion,” a mixed media art piece. Elinor Amir-Lobel ’22 earned a Gold Key for “A Traitor Within,” a personal essay and memoir. Danielle Amir-Lobel ’20 won an impressive 16 awards across multiple categories: two Gold Keys for “Free to Fly” and “Balance is Everything” in photography (pictured above), a Gold Key for her short story, “The Garden of Time,” four Silver Keys and three honorable mentions in art, and a Silver Key and five honorable mentions in writing. Elinor and Danielle’s regional Gold Key pieces will advance to the national competition in New York City where national medalists will be announced on March 13.

Shakespeare Competition
Nina Khosla ’19 was the second-place winner at the San Diego finals of the National Shakespeare Competition. The competition is hosted by The English-Speaking Union. Students must select and recite Shakespearean monologues and sonnets. Nina won the school competition at LJCDS and then competed as one of 16 finalists from around the county in the regional competition.

Student Essay Contest
Katherine Bevash ’27, Eliana Bevash ’27 and Robbie Luddy ’27 are finalists in the Friends of the La Jolla/Riford Library Student Essay Contest. The fourth graders wrote about a book that impacted their lives and essays were judged by community members. Our LJCDS students were three of the top six entries. The winning student will be announced at an awards ceremony on March 13.

Washington-Lincoln Laurels for Leaders
Yuqi Yang ’19 was recognized for her work as LJCDS associated student body (ASB) president by the Washington-Lincoln Laurels for Leaders. The nonprofit organization acknowledged ASB presidents from across San Diego County at a luncheon on Feb. 20. The luncheon featured seminars on self-leadership and financial education sponsored by The Blanchard Foundation and U.S. Bank. Each student recognized received a medallion and a $250 check. Torrey Techies Win First-Place
The Torrey Techies robotics team won first place in a FIRST® Tech Challenge interleague meet on Jan. 26. The team built, programmed and operated two robots and were coached by Darren Cameron, senior computer science lead. Congratulations to team members Dante Schrantz ’22, Dante Carnecchia ’20, Nicole Prescott ’20, Cameron Pazek ’20, Dakota Hernandez ’19, Joe Yin ’20, Jakob Rundlett ’19 and Ethan Burger ’20.

During their fourth league meet on Feb. 9, they won the Control Award for their autonomous driving and programming of the team's robot. The Control Award celebrates a team that uses sensors and software to increase the robot’s functionality on the field. This award is given to the team that demonstrates innovative thinking in the control system to solve game challenges such as autonomous operation, improving mechanical systems with intelligent control, or using sensors to achieve better results on the field.

Golden Classical Music Awards
Milan Radjabli ’28 won first prize for piano in the Golden Classical Music Awards international competition. This third-grader was invited to perform at Listweill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall on March 6. Milan also won first prize for piano in 2018. The competition’s mission is to discover talented artists and encourage their international music careers.

California Association of Professional Music Teachers Piano Competition
Congratulations to Gavin Li ’28 for winning first place at California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) Honors Competition for District 1 (San Diego and Imperial Counties). He will compete in the State Finals on April 6. In 2018, Gavin won first place for piano both in the District 1 competition and at the State Finals. The third grader began playing piano at four and a half years old and has performed in the annual CAPMT Southern Festival in Los Angeles since 2015.
