Classroom Makeover

By Tiffany Tran, director of marketing and communication and Rachel Baxter, digital media and design coordinator
For the past several months, the Lower School has been piloting new furniture in the classrooms to enhance student learning.
Second-grade educator Molly Saenz’s and third-grade educator Daniella Field’s classrooms received a makeover filled with new flexible seating options, including tables with wheels, balance ball seating, barrel chairs, wobble stools, floor seats, standing work surface, writable tables and more.

The new furniture is used as an instructional tool to promote collaboration, offer students more choices, enhance comfort and embrace movement in the learning process—all of which are critical to enriching learning.

As the pilot continues, Ms. Saenz and Ms. Field have already witnessed a difference in the class. “The students are more engaged in their learning,” says Ms. Saenz. “They feel empowered because they have a lot of choice in where they can sit and who they sit with.”

“They also feel more in tune with themselves,” shares Ms. Field. “They ask ‘Am I comfortable? Am I able to focus? What seat allows me to do my best?’ and they discover what they need for optimal learning. I like that students have control to be their best self.”

Ms. Saenz, Ms. Field and their students will continue to learn throughout the process through trial and error and report back to the Lower School with feedback.
In the 2019–2020 academic year, all classes in Grades 1–4 will receive a makeover with flexible seating options.
