The Middle School art project was selected as an exhibit at the San Diego International Airport.
Congratulations to LJCDS’s fifth and sixth graders! Their Middle School art project was selected to be featured in the “Forces of Nature” exhibition at the San Diego International Airport. The piece is one of 16 exhibits that were chosen out of 75 submissions and is the only student exhibit this year.

The project’s theme challenged LJCDS students to showcase the natural environment. They took digital photos at La Jolla Shores and abstracted them using photo editing software. Grade 5 students wove two of their best prints together. Grade 6 students cut simple shapes out of their print and collaborated to create photo collages.

“The LJCDS Forces of Nature proposal provided us with an opportunity to introduce our fifth and sixth-grade students to the limitless potential of contemporary photography and installation art,” says LJCDS visual arts educator Lissa Corona. “Our students were tasked with capturing our natural environment while focusing on the small details we often overlook as we go about our everyday routine. Through close-ups, framing and cropping, our students presented abstracted versions of La Jolla Shores, which were then used to create woven photographs and photo collage inspired by contemporary artists Mayumi Lake and Aimee Beaubien.”

Over 20 million people travel through the San Diego International Airport on an annual basis. Each year, the airport arts program identifies an exhibition theme relevant to San Diego and invites interested exhibitors to submit proposals related to that topic. The arts program staff, in collaboration with a guest curator, identify 10-15 exhibitors based on their creativity, unique use of media and relevance to the proposed theme. Collectively, each exhibition presents meaningful and imaginative perspectives on a single theme for the traveling public.
