Congratulations, Class of 2020!

We proudly congratulate the 122 graduates of the class of 2020.

Three cheers (or vehicle honks) for the 122 graduates of the class of 2020 who were honored during the 56th La Jolla Country Day School Commencement ceremony on Friday, June 5. Altogether, they received 581 college acceptances and will embark on to 70 different colleges and universities, including four internationally. We are proud to recognize 16 lifers from the class of 2020. Our lifers have called LJCDS home for 13 or more consecutive years.

This year’s reimagined ceremony will be one to remember. Due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, the graduates and their families celebrated from their vehicles, drive-in style, outside of Petco Park. The program was live-streamed for family, friends, LJCDS faculty and staff who couldn’t be there in person.

Head of School Gary Krahn, Ph.D., welcomed the class of 2020 and their families and spoke of the challenges facing the world right now. He is confident that the graduates will create transformative change and encouraged them to adjust their compasses to always err in the direction of kindness and dignity. Upper School social science and English educator Corbin Prychun emboldened students to develop their openness and bond with one another, to listen and acknowledge other’s pain. And to use that openness to make a positive impact on the world. Student Council Co-President Nikita Nair reminisced with memories from LJCDS and how time goes by in a blink.

Three awards were announced during commencement. Danielle Amir-Lobel earned the Trustees’ Award, presented by Board of Trustees President Lucy Smith Conroy '90, for achieving the highest cumulative grade point average of the graduating class. Cassidy Wechter and Wendy Yang tied to earn the Head of School Award, presented by Dr. Krahn, for achieving the second-highest cumulative grade point average. Head of Upper School Tom Trocano presented the Faculty Prize to Nicholas Doupsas and Lauren Ziment. This prize is awarded to two seniors who, through effort, character, scholarship, arts and athletics, have best demonstrated the ideas and spirit of La Jolla Country Day School.

Congratulations, class of 2020! We can’t wait to see how you inspire greatness for a better world.
