Torrey Wins Design Challenge

Student earns top spot in a virtual prototyping design challenge.

Congratulations to John Guckian ’23 who won first place in the MakerBot Thingiverse Prototyping Design Competition. The prompt was to create a desk organizer or component that classmates would be able to use to make learning from home easier.

John made it to the top three out of 578 submissions and then pitched his design to the judges in a special webinar to earn the top spot. His design is a desk organizer that takes up only a small portion of the desk for the clamp. It includes a slot for pencils and pens, a note holder, and a spot to hold and charge a mobile phone. Learn more about his design here.

All of the members of the Advanced Design and Innovation course and the 3D Modeling Flex Time entered the contest. John took his first design and innovation class, Product Design, in eighth grade, and since then he has made himself into an expert 3D modeler.

One of the prizes is a 3D printer for the classroom. Because LJCDS already owns a 3D printer in the Innovation Lab, the prize will be donated to the San Diego Cooperative Charter School.

MakerBot manufactures 3D printers and Thingiverse is a website dedicated to the sharing of user-created digital design files.
