Honoring faculty and staff with this annual award.
Congratulations to Carmy Cesaire, physical education teacher and coach, who was honored with the 2022 BAK’D Apple Award on June 7 during the final faculty and staff meeting.

The BAK’D Apple Award recognizes a faculty or staff member who makes special contributions to students’ total personal growth, extends themselves on a personal level to be a friend and mentor to students, identifies and develops unrecognized talent in students, or who has such a passion for their area of expertise that students are inspired to share that enthusiasm.

Coach Carmy teaches PE to students from Tiny Torreys to Grade 6 and coaches football, basketball, and track and field to Middle and Upper School students. He joined LJCDS full-time in 2015 but has coached football and basketball for more than 20 years, including Division III college football and basketball at Fitchburg State University.

With his remarkable ability and patience to work with a wide range of ages, Coach Carmy takes great pride in instilling a love of movement and healthy habits. No matter their age, his goal is to create an environment that encourages students to take risks and helps them gain confidence.

Director of Athletics Jeff Hutzler describes Coach Carmy as “a pillar of the LJCDS athletics and PE department. He is that rare educator who is a master varsity coach and physical education teacher. Carmy mentors college-bound athletes, and at the same time, he connects with our youngest Torreys and all the students in between. It is his behind-the-scenes organization and enthusiasm that makes our annual Olympic Day so successful. Nobody is more team-oriented; he does what needs to be done for the good of the community.”

The BAK’D Apple Award was proposed and established in 1997 by the Rubenson family whose two sons graduated from LJCDS (Aaron ’92 and Ben ’95). The name is a combination of the first letters of each of their first names (Ben, Aaron, Kathie and David) and apple refers to their home in Julian and their apple orchard, where they have invited faculty to join them to harvest apples over the years.
