Torreys in the News

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
We’re bursting with pride and excitement to share students' achievements.
Students were busy pursuing their passions this summer. See below for the multiple ways Torreys keep making us proud.

Connecting Through Dance and Music
Madeleine Goldman ’23 brings joy to memory centers through Dancers and Singers for a Cause, an organization she founded that has students performing for seniors who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. After originally performing solo for her grandfather, Madeleine has expanded her entourage to include members of her dance studio and choir, students from LJCDS, and other local schools and dance companies. They now perform together and interact one-on-one with the residents at various facilities. Read more in the Rancho Santa Fe Review.

Playing for Gold
Breya Cunningham ’23 (forward) and Jada Williams ’23 (point guard) were part of the USA Basketball Women’s U17 National Team that won the gold medal during the 2022 FIBA World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary. Jada scored 22 points with 15 assists in five games. Breya scored 62 points with 53 rebounds in seven games, including 10 points, 10 rebounds, a single-game-best five steals and one block in the final. Read how they were chosen in The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Gallons of LEGO®
Thanks to Alexander Fullerton ’30, nearly 100 homeless children have their very own smiley-faced container of LEGO toys. Alexander thoughtfully sorted through his 20-gallon collection of LEGO, packaged them into containers with an inspiring message, and personally delivered the donations to the San Diego Rescue Mission. Lacrosse Awards
Congratulations to two members of the LJCDS women’s lacrosse team who earned recognition from USA Lacrosse for the 2022 season. Sarah Lindlan ’23 (midfield) was named as one of only seven All-Americans from the San Diego region, and Drew Parker ’23 (defense) was one of only 11 from San Diego placed on the All-Academic team. Read more on the USA Lacrosse website.

Inspiring Voter Registration Trophy
LJCDS was one of four schools in the county to register over 85% of eligible voters from the class of 2022. Students were presented with the Dr. Shirley N. Weber Gold Award trophy by Dr. Weber, California’s Secretary of State, and Mayor Todd Gloria in the mayor's office this summer. Already getting a head start on this year’s award, Harris Feinman, Akaash Doshi and Dylan Coughlin from the class of 2023 kicked off a voter registration drive at the senior retreat in August.

National Merit Scholars
The National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists have been announced. Congratulations to Kyle Huo ’23, Jialin Li ’23, Erik Yang ’23 and Zitao Yang ’23 who qualified based on their 2021 PSAT scores. Fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors are chosen as semifinalists in the prestigious competition. Finalists will be notified in February. Read more here.
