Developing the Skills of Debate

By Jennifer Fogarty, communications content manager
Middle School students objectively analyze current events to expand their argumentation skills.
Capital punishment, animal rights, the benefits and drawbacks of assigning homework, and U.S. foreign policy on Ukraine are examples of what seventh graders may debate in Ancient History and Civilizations. In partnership with the library and media literacy, these budding historians expand their research experience, learn to find credible resources online and practice argumentation skills.

After students choose three topics to explore individually, members of the library team teach them how to do a deep dive and navigate specific databases for the first time. One example is the Issues and Controversies database, which offers extensive non-bias coverage of both sides of an issue in court cases, pro and con statements, NPR audio, editorials and more. When researching outside of these vetted databases, media literacy lessons are an important step in determining if the information is accurate and reliable.

In small teams, students choose one topic to prepare for a live debate. They flex their writing skills as they prepare an opening statement, rebuttal and closing statement. Students answer questions from classmates on the spot based on their research—practicing the skill of thinking on their feet.

This project allows students to use current events that are interesting to them to hone skills that they will use yearlong and beyond. Along with developing skills like organization, comparison and analysis, identifying reliable sources, and crafting thesis statements, students also practice participating in civil discourse (respectfully disagreeing and listening for understanding).

“I’m impressed with how maturely seventh graders handle these topics and how well they engage in civil discourse during the debate and treat the opposing team with respect,” shares Middle School history educator Jenna Dalva. “We really emphasize professionalism and supporting your arguments with evidence rather than solely your own opinions.”
