Youth Art Month 2023 Exhibition

Artwork by Upper School students Chloe Cho ’24, Mili Dunbar ’26, Anna Holland ’25, Sophia Lee ’25, Asha Postins ’24, Liver Stickney ’23 and Hally Wu ’24 were selected for the Youth Art Month 2023 Exhibition. This year, the exhibition included work by 93 students from San Diego schools and was on display from January 9–27 at the Poway Center for the Arts.

Asha’s artwork earned second place in the 2D art competition for Grades 9–12, and her work continues to the YAM Southern California exhibition to be on display at the Riverside Art Museum between March 4–18.

The exhibition was a call for teachers to submit student work from all Studio Art levels and classes. Upper School Visual Arts Educator Ivy Guild explained that choosing which artwork to enter was a tough decision, and students from Studio Art 1, 3 and AP Portfolio were selected for standing out in “terms of both technical and conceptual skills.” 

Youth Art Month started in 1961 through the Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. The California Art Education Association San Diego area (CAEASD) has been hosting the local Youth Art Month shows for more than 15 years. 

Alyssa Navapanich, president of CAEASD, shared how artwork is selected for the exhibition, “We use a panel of volunteer judges from the local arts community. The judges use a rubric that includes evaluating composition, originality, imagination and invention, technical competence and skill with materials, and visual impact.”
