Reflections by Upper School Director Greg Martin

In Hamlet, Shakespeare plumbs the depths of both the human condition and the very nature of drama itself. Smack dab in the middle of the play is . . . another play, The Mousetrap. Because a troupe of actors has visited Denmark, Hamlet finds a way to use drama to, as he says, “catch the conscience of the king.” Hamlet remarks that the role of drama is to hold up a mirror to nature, to show us our natural selves. You all can see that I have been tasked with doing some reflections on the Class of 2015. I’d like to ask them to help me here with a slightly interactive experiment that I hope will help you catch just a small glimpse of this class’ conscience. Seniors, I’m going to need a little help here. Please be ready to stand to answer some questions for me.

Last one:
How many of you recognize the collective sacrifices your families made to give you the gift of a La Jolla Country Day School education, whether mom and dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers supporting you? Now, Class of 2015, a round of applause for those people in your lives who supported you during your years here at Country Day.

Thanks for indulging me. I could obviously go on and on. My point in holding up this mirror for you, the faculty, and your friends and families is to encourage you to recognize the diplomas you are about to receive not as reflecting some one thing, but as reflecting many, many things, the collective and yet individual experiences of your class. It’s important that this diploma reflects all of the scholarly, artistic, athletic and ethical standards of the school so that it remains a living, breathing document for you and for all of us, a reminder of all that you accomplished, yes, but more importantly of all that you can and always will be able to accomplish. When you look at it in the future, my hope is that it will reflect not only who you were, but also who you can always become. Congratulations!
