Welcome to Summer at Country Day!

La Jolla Country Day School is proud to offer experiences for every age, from the arts to athletics and innovation to business. 

Imagine field trips exploring San Diego, navigating obstacles with parkour, cooking pies or noodles, learning to speak Spanish, becoming an engineer or inventor, building leadership skills, sculpting in ceramics, jumping in cheer camp, learning the business of sports management, coding a video game or dancing hip-hop. These are just a few experiences awaiting campers at LJCDS this summer. 

  • Weekly sessions run from June 12–August 11.
  • Morning (8:30–11:30 a.m.), afternoon (12:30–3:30 p.m.) and full-day experiences.
  • Grades 1–12 summer sessions are open to the public. The age 3–kindergarten programs are only available for students enrolled at LJCDS in the fall.

  • Camp Torreys Field Trips (Grades 1–2 and Grades 3–4) Full Day

    School’s out for the summer! It’s time to roam wild with special full-day field trips that include transportation, admission tickets and lunch. Students should bring a morning and afternoon snack, a refillable water bottle and sunscreen.

    • Thursday: SeaWorld San Diego 
    • Friday: Fleet Science Center and San Diego Air and Space Museum

    Come play with friends and enjoy an afternoon of summer fun. Camp Torreys offers a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including group games, campus nature walks, crafts and much more during each weekly session. Campers venture out on field trips every Thursday. Pack a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen for water fun on Fridays (except July 28 for Carnival Day).

    Engineers experience mental challenges through the exercise of finding creative solutions to problems and participating in physical and sports challenges while creating LEGO constructions that can be used to make the obstacles easier.

  • Mad Science: All-Stars (Grades 1–4) 

    Learn about famous scientists and inventors who were all-stars in their fields of expertise. Follow in their footsteps with the science skills needed to rise to the top. Teams build superstructures, create a volcanic eruption, examine rocks formed from volcanic magma, and build a kite to experiment with lift, aerodynamics and air pressure.

  • Magical Art Adventures (Grades 1–4)

    See the world through the eyes of a phoenix. Make a nest from nothing but feathers, twigs and fairy dust. Paint the sky with every color of the rainbow. This camp guides students through different projects that incorporate painting, drawing and sculpture to learn about the world around them. Draw horses or unicorns or both at this all-inclusive magical animal camp.

  • Mad Science: Brixology (Grades 1–4) 

    Put on a hard hat and step into the shoes of an engineer. Campers spend the week learning about aerospace, mechanical, automotive, structural and nautical engineering. Through hands-on construction projects using LEGO® bricks, teams of campers complete engineering projects of varying difficulty levels. They learn about aerospace engineering while assembling a space station, explore mechanical engineering while building boats and vehicles, and discover nature’s engineering secrets while investigating biomimicry. Let the tinkering begin!

  • Not from this Planet - Creativity knows no boundaries! (Grades 1–4)

    Night skies, extraterrestrial architecture and interplanetary mayhem are just the beginning of this far-flung camp. Put out-of-this-world designs on paper and canvas and then bring them to life by building with repurposed objects and found materials.

  • Seaside Arts Center: Hip-hop (Grades 1–4)

    Learn various styles of hip-hop and study the history that shaped the dance form as it evolved from African-American and Afro-Caribbean dances like tap, jazz, swing, disco, breakdancing, Capoeira and traditional African dance. Each day includes stretching and cardio warm-up, dance games, and learning hip-hop moves and style through choreography. There is a culminating performance at the end of camp.

  • SPARK: Little Shoppers (Grades 1–2)

    In this practical program, campers become savvy shoppers through games and hands-on projects. Experiential bartering and purchasing activities help students internalize key concepts related to money choices, like needs versus wants. Campers analyze marketing power, put their cashier math skills to the test, and engage in dynamic marketplaces taking turns as buyers and sellers.

  • Young Engineers: Treasure Hunters Camp (Grades 1–4) 

    X marks the spot for this adventure. Explore the fun and games to find what lies at the end of the treasure hunt. Hint: treasure hunters may need to be an expert at rock, paper, scissors or hitting a bullseye. They may even come across Hansel and Gretel.

  • Cooking Round the World: International Pies (Grades 1–4)

    From Irish Shepherd’s pie to Greek Spanakopita, German apple pie to French quiche and Filipino Buko pies, students learn pie-making techniques with an international twist. Both sweet and savory pies are included. In addition to making the dough and fillings, the young bakers eat their creations, too.

  • Kodely: Coding with Empathy: Level 1 (Grades 1–4)

    Students learn to code and work with cool sensors to build a new project every week while learning about technology through a lens of user empathy and design. These are the skills used by teams at Microsoft and Apple and taught at top universities. Students learn to think like a designer, take those technical skills beyond the classroom setting and apply them to the real world.

  • Mad Science: Crazy Chem-Works (Grades 1–4)

    Shake up a flask of fun in the lab and become a junior chemist. Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for sensational results. Check out the colors of chemistry with the power of pH paper and create a stopper-popping reaction. Probe the properties of light and discover some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology. Campers have a blast as they make some crazy concoctions.

  • SPARK Business Academy: My First Lemonade Stand (Grades 1–2) 

    Young lemonade entrepreneurs learn how to make lemonade and earn money selling it. They develop business savvy from designing marketing flyers to estimating profits and experimenting with recipes. Campers launch the lemonade stand on Friday as an optional showcase event to raise money for a charity they select.

  • Kodely: Inventing with Minecraft (Grades 1–4) 

    Coding isn’t the only skill needed to be a computer scientist or software engineer; students need to develop their computational thinking skills to break down problems and solve them. In this session, students explore command blocks, learn how to set goals and work through the details of more complex designs while learning how to build creatively. They are willing to experiment because there’s no one correct answer. As a result, they feel encouraged to think outside the box and come up with solutions on their own.

  • Mad Science: Operation Invention (Grades 1–4)

    Junior inventors take a journey of discovery from the real-life inventions of da Vinci, Edison and the Wright brothers to Isaac Asimov’s dreams of future inventions. With a little ingenuity, campers are challenged to recreate some of the most important and exciting inventions of all time, including catapults, bridges, circuits and light bulbs. Next, they’ll overcome challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important tool of all—their minds!

  • Cooking Round the World: Rise Up: The Art of Bread Making (Grades 1–4) 

    The only thing better than the smell of homemade bread is being able to eat it. This bread-making class teaches kneading techniques, the science behind yeast, flour varieties, bread shapes and loaf pans, using various baking tools, and incorporating interesting herbs into the bread. Learn how to make jams, marmalades and butters.

    Emerging technologies have the potential to make great contributions to the world. In this workshop, students engage in the design and decision-making processes for new technology and its use. They learn the core concepts around emerging technology and gain a new perspective on how they work. Most importantly, students become creators and not just consumers of technology.

    This introduction to robots has young engineers building unique motorized robots that transform into four unique creatures, each increasing in difficulty. Discover the inner workings of robots by experimenting with circuits, gears, sensors and power supplies. Learn about robot programming and the different tasks robots perform in the world. Experiment with sound sensing and solar-powered robots.

    Students internalize the benefits of doing well by doing good, reviewing a number of charities and discussing the merits of giving back. They collaborate in small teams to select a charity or issue they feel passionate about and come up with practical ways they can support that cause (including raising awareness, volunteering and fundraising), then create their own mock foundation.
