Welcome to Summer at Country Day!

La Jolla Country Day School is proud to offer experiences for every age, from the arts to athletics and innovation to business. 

Imagine field trips exploring San Diego, navigating obstacles with parkour, cooking pies or noodles, learning to speak Spanish, becoming an engineer or inventor, building leadership skills, sculpting in ceramics, jumping in cheer camp, learning the business of sports management, coding a video game or dancing hip-hop. These are just a few experiences awaiting campers at LJCDS this summer. 

  • Weekly sessions run from June 12–August 11.
  • Morning (8:30–11:30 a.m.), afternoon (12:30–3:30 p.m.) and full-day experiences.
  • Grades 1–12 summer sessions are open to the public. The age 3–kindergarten programs are only available for students enrolled at LJCDS in the fall.

  • 3D Modeling (Grades 5-8)

    This four-day 3D modeling and 3D printing summer camp is the perfect opportunity for students to dive into the exciting world of computer-aided design (CAD) using the industry-leading software OnShape. Over the course of the week, campers learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling and have the chance to bring their creations to life through 3D printing.

  • Ceramics: Hand Building (Grades 6–12)

    Explore ceramics through traditional hand-building methods. Coiling, pinching and slab techniques are covered via functional and non-functional art forms. Students work on sculptural techniques to enrich their understanding of this ancient and beautiful craft while exploring surface design techniques such as stamping, carving, slip decoration, wax resist and glaze application methods.

  • Closed—Credit Cards, Interest Rates and the Value of Money (Grades 5–8)

    Head of School Dr. Gary Krahn teaches the time value of money and helps students understand how to calculate the cost of using a credit card and interest when taking out a loan. Lenders earn money by charging interest, whether on a student loan, personal loan, auto loan, mortgage, or credit card. Students experience how interest is the price paid for borrowing money from a lender.

  • Environmental Art (Grades 5–8)

    This four-day class is for students who love nature and express themselves through creative outlets. Learn using sustainable and natural mediums and create artwork such as paper-making, natural berry watercolors, soap-making, leaf imprints, natural dyes, recycled buildings and more.

  • Meet Middle School (Grades 5–6) 

    This four-day course is designed to prepare new and returning Torreys for a great experience in Middle School. Students meet new friends and foster connections to start the school year feeling at home on their new campus. Working with classroom teachers and the head librarian, students navigate the learning management system and Google Drive, set up lockers, learn effective study skills and take a deep dive into research. Friday features an all-day field trip adventure in San Diego.

    Spend four days working out those writing muscles. Practice writing stories, reviews and opinion pieces. Learn how to develop and organize ideas, get them on paper and share them with readers. Class is personalized depending on the student and their needs.
     
    What to bring: Laptop or tablet with a Google account (does not need to be a school account, can be personal) and Google Docs. The teacher supplies paper and pencils.

  • Basics of Woodworking (Grades 5–8) 

    Learn the basics of working with wood and create beautiful, practical projects. Over the course of the week, campers work with hand tools and the school's Epilog laser engraver to create a cheese board and other projects. This is the perfect experience for makers and crafters ready to take their construction skills to the next level.

    It’s time to explore personal expression through the versatile and oh-so-messy medium of clay using the pottery wheel. Students learn various forming techniques emphasizing wheel throwing and the production of functional pottery forms. Surface design techniques such as stamping, carving, slip decoration, wax resist and glaze application methods are covered. Class is limited to 14 students.

  • Grow a Garden (Grades 5–8)

    Learn how to grow your own food. This course gives students the skills and knowledge to start growing their own ecological garden through hands-on STEAM activities such as planter building, seed planting/starting, garden design, native planting and hydroponics. The course evolves based on student experience and interest. All students take home their own herb planter.

  • I Love Big Paintings! (Grades 5–8) 

    Learn about the expressionist artists that broke away from the traditional and dove head-first into the world of color and emotion. Express your inner being in technicolor and larger-than-life scale while learning balance, texture, color-mixing and a variety of BIG painting techniques.

    In this immersive program, students can engage with local nonprofit organizations, participate in service activities and learn about the nonprofit sector. Activities include volunteering on-site at local nonprofits. Students will:
    • Understand the context of service: politically, historically, emotionally and environmentally
    • Think critically about the types of service with which we are engaged and the root causes of the need for it 
    • Focus on collaborative relationships with community partners and center them in design, facilitation and evaluation of service projects
    • Expand their understanding of themselves, their community and the world.
    • Remember that each person, habitat and space has inherent dignity and avoid making assumptions based on their own experiences
    • Model respect for inclusivity, strive for belonging, and value diversity through their language and actions

    Curious about being an athletic trainer or just want to learn how to treat your own injuries? Students get a crash course in sports medicine and anatomy.     For the sports lover, future team general manager, sports team owner or ESPN analyst, this unique program shines a light on the world of sports from a business perspective.     Get down to hip-hop classics and music filled with positive messages. Dancers learn hip-hop grooves and hone their skills while exploring various hip-hop styles and techniques including breakdance, tutting, popping and locking, waving and more. Students gain confidence in their own personal style and develop as choreographers, all while learning about the hip-hop styles that inspire the world.

    Be the boss at Apple or Nike for a day. In this leadership program, campers act as CEOs for leading companies and collaborate to make strategic recommendations to address real business issues. Campers enhance their problem-solving skills, develop business savvy and cultivate a strategic mindset as future leaders.

Both sweet and savory pies are included. In addition to making the dough and fillings, the young bakers eat their creations, too.

  • Drawing and Painting (Grades 5–8)

    Learn about different drawing and painting techniques and new ways to use graphite, colored pencils, pastels, tempera and acrylic paints. Paint from real life, draw from your imagination, and explore the work of artists from various artistic backgrounds and movements.

  • Kodely: Coding with Empathy: Level 2 (Grades 5–6)

    Students learn how to frame their ideas as experiments and bring others into their vision of a Smart City with projects such as building a smart home alarm system. They work through a series of design challenges to add to their portfolio of experience. Students dive into the process of rapid prototyping and learn how to make their ideas tangible using microcontrollers and sensors. They gain the tools and mindsets to break patterns, generate new ideas and take creative leaps.

  • Rational Number Explorations (Grades 5–6)

    This two-week course is designed to help students deepen their connections and understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. While standard algorithms for rational number operations are useful, students will examine various strategies and models for working with numbers and apply these strategies to real-world contexts and problems. They will also discuss and defend their ideas through oral and written explanations.

  • Seaside Arts Center: Musical Theater Dance (Grades 5–8)

    From The Lion King to Frozen, Newsies to Hamilton, it’s the dancing on Broadway that makes the show. Spend a week this summer learning how to move like the stars. Camp includes daily dance and stage makeup classes, plus real Broadway routines. Each one-week session concludes with a brief performance.

  • SPARK: My First Food Truck (Grades 5–6)

    Campers select a food theme, choose an ideal location, identify target customers, design appealing menus, and form a comprehensive business plan covering strategy, marketing, operations and finance, including capital-raising needs. Activities include drafting mission statements, setting prices, estimating expenses and learning key financial metrics. This program offers a tasty way to develop business savvy. Note: no food is handled at camp.

  • Kodely: Well-Rounded Innovators with Minecraft (Grades 5–6) 

    Students use Minecraft to build out-of-this-world virtual environments while delving into the fundamentals of design, engineering and computational thinking. To become well-rounded innovators, students learn more than coding, they learn how to build their confidence to think for themselves, make decisions, and use their knowledge to design and build something.

  • Parks and Playgrounds: Exploring Two- and Three-Dimensional Measurement (Grades 7–8) 

    In this hands-on, experiential course, students build on their geometry and geometric measurement knowledge to solve problems involving angle measures, area, surface area and volume. As a culminating activity, students make a floor plan of one of the shared spaces at school, applying the principles of geometric measurement to everyday life. A tool kit containing tracing and graph paper, colored pencils, scissors, a ruler, and a protractor will be provided to each student.

  • Seaside Arts Center: Hip-hop (Grades 5–8)

    Get down to hip-hop classics and music filled with positive messages. Dancers learn hip-hop grooves and hone their skills while exploring various hip-hop styles and techniques including breakdance, tutting, popping and locking, waving and more. Students gain confidence in their own personal style and develop as choreographers, all while learning about the hip-hop styles that inspire the world.

  • Cooking Round the World: Rise Up: ?The Art of Bread Making (Grades 5–8) 

    The only thing better than the smell of homemade bread is being able to eat it. This bread-making class teaches kneading techniques, the science behind yeast, flour varieties, bread shapes and loaf pans, using various baking tools, and incorporating interesting herbs into the bread. Learn how to make jams, marmalades and butters.

  • Kodely: From Idea to Mobile App (Grades 5–6)

    This program teaches students to create, not just consume, technology. Students design, wireframe and solve a community problem using technology, developing key skills such as creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. They learn project management skills while building their app in phases and learn to market and present it to a panel of judges.

    This course is designed to prepare new Torreys for a great experience in Middle School.   • Roller Coaster Building and Design (Grades 6–8)

    Students learn the basic concepts that allow roller coasters to work and then design and build their own model roller coaster. Builders get hands-on experience with physics principles, designing and prototyping.
