Kicking off the College Search Process With the Class of 2027
By College Counseling
On Friday, January 9, the College Counseling Team spent the day with the Class of 2027 at the University of San Diego for our
Country Day College Launch (CDCL). It is an exciting day and marks the official kick-off of their college admissions process.
The purpose of the day is to:
Get all Grade 11 students to the starting line at the same time
Provide an overview of the process
Raise awareness of the support and resources available
Outline short-term goals for the spring semester
Jackie Burkett, the LJCDS admissions representative from the University of San Diego, kicked off the day with a welcome from the university and helped students focus on the day’s purpose. Then, students were divided into college counseling cohorts to participate in a college-bound assessment and reflection session, helping them center themselves and discover what they ‘need’ (not necessarily what they want) as they approach the college search process and initial list building. The feedback received ranged from “That’s interesting, I didn’t know that about myself.” to “This was spot on!”
The program continued with three sessions, each with an LJCDS college counselor presenting College Kickstart and MaiaLearning (the two primary databases we utilize), How to Build Your College List, and Components of a College Application. Students had the opportunity to explore campus independently through the USD Campus Photo Scavenger Hunt.
To close out the day, students were introduced to the LJCDS College Essay Advising Team. These three team members provide invaluable essay writing support while the soon-to-be seniors craft their college essays. They are a wonderful resource and unique to our campus community. More details to come on how and when the students can reach out to them later this spring.
It was a day full of valuable information, and we look forward to working with each individual student and family.
