Another Successful LJCDS College Admission Symposium
On Sunday, January 25, the college counseling team hosted its second annual College Admission Symposium, creating an opportunity for the Upper School community to connect with admission leaders from across the country. The workshop format, with its diverse topics ranging from College 101 and Admissions in the AI Age to specialized paths such as STEM, Business, and Higher Education Abroad, was intentionally designed to meet students where they are in their college exploration.
The response exceeded expectations, with both students and parents asking thoughtful questions that impressed the admission officers. This high level of engagement demonstrated the LJCDS community’s commitment to understanding the college admissions process through the perspectives of those directly involved in decision-making.
What made this symposium truly distinctive was its inclusive, communitywide approach. The College Counseling Team intentionally designed it to bring together the entire Upper School community - from freshmen to seniors, along with their families. This cross-grade format created a unique dynamic in which students could learn not only from the presenters but also from peers at different stages of their college journey.
The presence of actual college admissions officers who will read our students’ applications added another valuable dimension. It transformed the often abstract concept of "college admissions" into something more tangible and personal. Students and parents could connect faces and personalities to institutions, making the whole process feel more approachable and human. This direct interaction helped demystify the admissions process and enabled families to understand the perspective of those who will ultimately evaluate their applications.
Looking ahead, we are energized by the symposium’s success and its impact on our school community. The foundation we’ve built – combining expert guidance, peer learning, and authentic connections with admissions officers – will serve as a model for future events. As we continue to evolve our college counseling program, we remain committed to providing innovative opportunities that empower our students to approach their college journey with confidence, knowledge, and a clear understanding of their unique paths forward.
