Brian Hirshman '02 will be a neurosurgery resident at the University of California, San Diego starting in July. After graduating from LJCDS, where he was a lifer, he attended Williams College and majored in computer science and economics. Following graduation, he began an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in computer science and sociology at Carnegie Mellon, but midway through left for medical school at the University of California San Diego to pursue a career in neurosurgery. In medical school he found a way to tie together his diverse interests together. After completing his MD last year, he spent this year finishing his Ph.D. examining how social networks (and specifically, the "academic genealogy" of who trains whom) affect research results in neurosurgery. He credits his broad set of interests, in part, to the excellent teachers and mentors at La Jolla Country Day and the guidance and encouragement they provided.
