Student Takes Top Prize in Regional Government Contest

Congratulations to Jerod Sun ’17 who won first place in the Southern District of California’s Civics Essay Contest. This year’s contest coincides the 50th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision in the case of Miranda v. Arizona.
When asked about what inspired him to participate in the contest, Sun said “I’ve always been interested in government and politics, especially local ones, as they affect our daily lives the most. I took Mr. [Jonathan] Shulman’s AP Government class and learned about this contest. I went to the library, borrowed as many books as I could find, and decided to give it a try.”
The essay prompt asked about the importance of the 1966 Supreme Court Decision in Miranda v. Arizona and asked to “learn the facts of the case; understand the court’s decision and discuss the relevancy of the Fifth Amendment; and consider additional rights established by the courts for those accused of crimes.”
“Writing this essay has inspired me to do further research into the judicial system of the United States. I had the opportunity to talk to Justices of the Southern District, including Judge Sammartino, the court clerk, and several lawyers in attendance. Regardless of what I choose to do in the future, I’ll continue to study American government and remain engaged and informed in society!” shares Sun.
